This uniquely Bahamas attraction can only be seen on Nassau—a breathtaking arrangement of old European ruins, surrounded by tropical gardens delicately arranged. For some one-of-a-kind photos and a great story, come visit Cloisters.
What are the Cloisters?
Cloisters are not native to the island—these ruins are the remains of a 14th-century French monastery. The newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearts—of Hearst Castle fame—imported four such sets of columns and arches. This one was deconstructed, brought to the Bahamas, and reconstructed, by Huntington Hartford (businessman, philanthropist, and heir to the A&P fortune) in the 1960s. It was built on a high ground, overlooking the ocean.
Today, it is a magnificent contradiction. Imported from a world thousands of miles away and hundreds of years ago, the columns stand in stark contrast to the colonial-style building and the tropical flora around them. Yet when you see these ruins with the ocean breeze in your nostrils, you’ll know it’s not impossible—it’s very real.
Splendidly, these aren’t the only Nassau, Bahamas attractions in the area—the resort they’re part of also boasts the Versailles gardens of Nassau, named after the famous gardens of that French palace. With magnificent ancient architecture and beautiful flora, these are a highly recommended stop while you’re on Nassau; they’re also highly popular for Bahamian destination weddings.
How to Find the Secluded Cloisters
Cloisters are on Paradise Island, which is just north of Nassau. Taxi, car, or ferry can take you from one island to the other. The ruins are near the north shore.
The ruins are in fact on private property now. Part of the “One and Only Ocean Club” just a few years ago, The Ocean Club Resort is now owned by The Four Seasons. While you can walk up to them and try to sneak some pictures yourself, you may be requested to leave. However, it is possible to book a tour of this Nassau attraction with people who have permission to view the gardens—this is the surest way to get a picture you’ll love.
