About Harbour Island
Founded in the 17th century, Harbour Island, Bahamas has retained its Old World charm. Dunmore Town, the most populated part of Harbour Island, was once the capital of the Bahamas. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, Harbour Island was used as a trading port, a crucial location for sugar plantations, and a rum distributor during the Prohibition Era. Today, white picket fences line many of the streets, behind which pastel-hued historic buildings stand, reminding visitors of Harbour Island’s colorful past.
The geography of Harbour Island is dependent on the side. At only 3 miles long and between 0.5 and 1.5 miles wide, Harbour Island is small but packs in an enormous amount of natural beauty. On the Atlantic side of the island, pink sand beaches predominate. On the West side of the island, white sand coves and boat docks give way to turquoise blue water.
Altogether, the rich history and colorful environment on Harbour Island transports visitors into a unique Bahamas experience that blends old with new.
