Located about 65 miles offshore of the island of Nassau, Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is a one-of-a-kind National Park in the Bahamas. Home to many endangered plants and animals like stromatolite coral reef, sea iguanas, and seabirds, Exuma Cays is a gorgeous showcase of some of the most threatened species in the Bahamas.

About Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park

Established in 1958, the Exuma Park is one of 25 National Parks and Protected Areas in the Bahamas by the Bahamas National Trust. Believed to be the only non-profit, non-governmental agency managing a nationwide system of parks, the Bahamas National Trust protects vulnerable coral, birds, wildlife, and plants across the Bahamas.

Many of the plants and animals at Exuma Cays are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on earth. Adhering to a strict “take only photographs, leave only footprints” policy, Exuma Cays does not allow any species or objects to leave the park. This huge conservation effort has led to the protection and preservation of hundreds of threatened and vulnerable species.

Location of Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park

Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is located on a large cay about 65 miles off the southwestern tip of the island of Eleuthera. Accessible only by air and by boat, the Exuma Cays are remote but well worth the extra travel.

To travel to Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park by air, Skybahamas or Bahamasair fly from Nassau to Exuma International Airport. These two airlines are the best way to get to Exuma Park.

To travel by boat, Bahamas Ferries boats and mail boats leave Nassau for Exuma almost daily. The latter is a cheaper and more colorful adventure.

Life on Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park

Exuma Park is home to many rare coral reefs, shifting sand bars, seabirds, endangered iguanas, and several endemic plant species. Also residing in the Exuma Cays is the Bahamas’ only resident mammal, the hutia. At only six inches tall, Hutia looks like a small cross between a capybara and a wallaby. Endemic to the Bahamas, these small mammals are endangered but thriving only at the Exuma Cays.
