Insider Tips for Your Harbour Island Travel

HomeBahamas Visitor InfoInsider Tips for Your Harbour Island Travel

Make the most out of your time on Harbour Island by getting a local’s perspective on where to go and what to see! We’ve put together a guide to Harbour Island travel tips below for your convenience.

Harbour Island Travel and Getting Around

While not having its own airport, Harbour Island travel does pose a few challenges so visitors will need to fly into North Eleuthera (ELH) Airport on Eleuthera. From there, you can take a taxi to the water taxi dock and then a 10-minute water taxi to Harbour Island, each of which usually cost about $5.00 USD per person cash. Once you’re on the island, you can take a $5.00 taxi, a golf cart rental, or your own two feet to your vacation rental. Golf carts are the most common form of transportation on the island.

Good Eats

The Conch Shack is only place in town to get conch that doesn’t fry it, served raw in a salad. Fun fact: only foreigners pronounce the conch the “ch” in conch; if you want to sound like a local, say “conk!” Other conch shacks can be found on Bay Street, north of Government Dock. Most restaurants closed on Sundays and have live entertainment at night, so keep that in mind when planning your meals out on the town.

Fun Activities

Beach days are the overwhelmingly popular reason that people come to visit Harbour Island. Go horseback riding or enjoy a breathtaking sunset view. Our famous pink sand beaches transport you to another world. The distinct hue comes from the reddish pink tint of the shells of Foraminifera, a microscopic organism that has an external shell. Their shells get washed to shore by the hurricanes and turn the beaches pink.

Harbour Island’s reef system keeps the water clear, creating perfect snorkeling and diving conditions. Explore offshore among the island’s underwater caves and shipwrecks. Book a fishing charter and go deep sea fishing for marlin, tuna, and bonefish in some of the world’s best game waters.
