HomeBahamas Beach GuideSurfer’s Beach

Surfer’s Beach is a tranquil beach in the northern central part of the island of Eleuthera, renowned for having some of the best surfing conditions in the world. To learn more about what makes Surfer’s Beach in Eleuthera special and why it’s worth visiting during your Eleuthera vacation read on below!

Tips for Visiting Surfer’s Beach in Eleuthera

In order to make the most out of your experience at Surfer’s Beach, there are a few things you should know prior to going to experience these Bahamas attractions.

The surfing conditions here are optimal—so much so, in fact, that surfers from across the globe often rank Surfer’s Beach in Eleuthera as one of the world’s best surfing beaches, even against premier surfing destinations such as California, Hawaii, and New Zealand.

Beyond the pristine beauty of its sands and ideal surfing conditions, Surfer’s Beach is also renowned for its lack of crowds and the laidback attitude of surfers in comparison to other more popular beaches.

When setting off on your surfing excursion, be mindful of the rock reef as you launch your board. The waves break over the reef, extending out from the water’s edge. This means that at low tide, rocks can jut out of the sand and damage your surfboard. The beach’s steep profile also makes entering and exiting a challenge because of the dumping shorebreak.

The surfing season here begins in late September and ends in late March. Surfer’s Beach experiences particularly good surfing conditions during the winter season, when the water is warm (78-79 degrees Fahrenheit, or 25-26 degrees Celsius).

A note of caution: you may encounter small reef sharks during your time surfing at Surfer’s Beach. Fortunately, these reef sharks are often smaller (averaging around 4 feet in length) and are generally avoidant of people.

Poisonwood, a plan that causes burning sensations when it contacts your skin, grows along some of the roads near the beach. Ask a local what the plant looks like and what to do if it touches you.

Additionally, you’ll want to ask a local where the boneyard at Surfer’s Beach. It’s in the sea near a big rock formation, but a local can point out exactly which areas to avoid while surfing.
