The History of Haynes Library & More
Haynes Library is a historic landmark located in Governor’s Harbour, the capital of Eleuthera Island. The library was built in 1897 by Governor William Frederick Haynes. It is the oldest government building on the island. The upstairs of the building has been the location of the island’s library since 1897. The downstairs of the building used to house offices, including the official residence of the island’s local doctor. Today, however, the entire building is home to the island’s public library.
The library is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and is free to the public. Anyone who visits the library has full use of their internet cafe and books with the purchase of a membership. They also have books for sale on the first floor of the library.
The Haynes Library also offers several events including a weekly history talk and art classes on their front patio. The building is known for its pale pink exterior and turquoise hurricane shutters. There is also a balcony on the second floor with amazing views of the ocean.
