Property Details

Getaway is a unique beach front home on a spectacular untouched beach with complete privacy, on the northwestern coast of Current (a quaint village settlement of about 100 people) on North Eleuthera, in the Bahamas. Current is in close proximity to world-renowned Harbour Island.

The main house is well maintained, open, and has a clean, modern architectural design with a comfortable atmosphere. On one side are banks of French doors open to long, screened, covered verandahs facing the sea. The entrance to the home features is an enclosed garden designed by landscape architect owner.

Getaway comfortably houses 4 people with an open living, dining and kitchen area, one master bedroom and one open loft room.

Natural Mexican shellstone tile, stretching from the interior ground floor surfaces to the verandas on both sides of the house, blurs the line between the interior and the exterior. The color of the Mexican shellstone, similar in hue to the beckoning beach and the sea green hues of the painted wood trim and doors, is a simple reflection of the greater surrounding beauty.

An expansive A-frame roof stretches the full length of the house and provides an open roomy feel to the living room and kitchen. In this living area, comprising half of the floor plan of the house, the full magnitude of the spaciousness is felt. It is here that the interior of the house reaches its highest point, at the apex of the beams, some 20 feet from the floor.

A modern bathroom separates the living/kitchen area from the master bedroom and essentially divides the floor plan and the elevation of the house in two. Above the master bedroom, a loft with white washed pine floors, is a second large airy bedroom that peers down over the living area.

Interior ceilings are finished with exposed tongue-and-groove roof sheathing. Also exposed are 3” x 10” structural rafters of the house, giving the impression, when one is luxuriating on the comfortable living room recliners, that the hull of a sturdy, seaworthy boat has been carefully flipped over and placed overhead.

The undulating terrain gently slopes from the entrance road down towards the sea. Built on a rocky site with large sink holes and a cave, Getaway was delicately placed to minimally impact this beautiful site.

Pathways, with soft grass joints, lead from the entrance drive to the entrance verandahs of the main house. Just to the left of the walkways as you approach the house is a low native stone wall enclosing a lush planting of palms and hiding the opening to a cave. The cave entrance drops to about 8’ below ground level revealing a long enclosed cavity stretching the full length of the house. The cavity is about half as long as it is wide.

Back at ground level (over the cave) a walkway leads to a lush tropical breezeway that opens out onto the seaward side of the house. In contrast to the more manicured colored tropical landscape on the entrance side of the house, the seaside landscape celebrates the beauty of the indigenous shrub woodland vegetation, comprising salt- and wind-tolerant trees and shrubs, common to this area. Most of the vegetation on this side of the house was undisturbed during construction, with foundation planting consisting of native salt-tolerant seagrape hedges. Mature gum elemi trees frame views from the verandah to the sea.

A meandering, stepped walkway leads down to the sea where rock outcrops and the beautiful beach are gently caressed by the sea. These same rock outcrops ensure that the stretch of beach adjacent to the house is kept hidden and private. Beyond the beach the sea stretches out to the horizon; the view from here is uninterrupted and limitless.

New ReviewThe house is very nice and open (loved the high ceiling!). by S. Tsmugi 06/18/2013
New ReviewThe house is very nice and open (loved the high ceiling!). We loved the large screened porches, especially the one facing the ocean. The beach in front of the house is so beautiful and calm, and it's totally private. The little path to the beach was pretty, with beautiful trees and plants. We enjoyed kayaking (thank you very much for getting the extra ones!) and snorkeling (there is a good spot off to further right). Having full-time A/C was very nice, too. The kitchen is equipped sufficiently, and it's nice to have 3 different tables (front porch, inside and ocean side porch) to choose from to eat your meals. I recommend this place to people who want a very quiet, private and relaxing time by a beautiful ocean.

Getaway was the perfect spot for our family vacation (July 2011). by John & Erica C. 06/18/2013
Getaway was the perfect spot for our family vacation (July 2011). The house is wonderful — clean, organized, well-equipped with every modern convenience and comfortable. The beautiful beach with its crystal clear waters was just the right size for our family. And the location provided both privacy and convenience, tucked away at the end of small road but only minutes from the centre of the friendly settlement of Current.

Some days we toured the island (Spanish Wells, Harbour Island, Preacher’s Cave, Governor’s Harbour and Current Bay Beach) and on other days we were happy to spend at Getaway – the perfect place to relax, and enjoy the sun and sea. We especially liked the large screened-in porches where we enjoyed most of our meals.

Getaway was wonderful! Thank you!

My wife and I completely enjoyed our time at Getaway (May 2012)! by Charlie D. 06/18/2013
My wife and I completely enjoyed our time at Getaway (May 2012)! It is such a wonderful property and house, with very pretty and secluded grounds. We didn't see another person on the beach the entire time we were there! There are no houses for about a mile on one side of the house and 100 yards or so on the other side. We did take day trips to other beaches, but enjoyed the convenience and privacy of the beach right in front of Getaway the most. The house itself is very nicely done, extremely clean, and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay! You can tell that the house and property have been very well cared for. The property manager was great, and very welcoming. He also lives close by should there be anything urgent that comes up. It was an amazing vacation and we would definitely recommend Getaway to others!

We had an absolutely WONDERFUL time and, now that we're home again, all Erika and I can talk about is "how can we get back there again next year." We loved the little quiet (basically private!) beach front, the long walks along the beach, the gentle warm water.

The first few days there we toured part of the island (Ben's Beach, Preacher's Cave, Harbour Island, Gregory Town and Governor's Harbour) but the last couple of days we decided to just sit back and enjoy Getaway. There was no need to go anywhere else!

The unit itself seems to have everything one could ever want. The beautifully paneled vaulted ceilings and inner and outer French double doors gave the unit a wonderfully spacious feeling. The decorations are indeed very tasteful. In the kitchen one had EVERYTHING one might need: glasses, plates, Saran wrap, plastic containers for leftovers, utensils, spices and even baking needs. All the towels and sheets, the binoculars, books about Eleuthera and the Bahamas, movies/DVDs, ... everything was great.

Thank you again!
